Dear Chief Editor:
I am writing on behalf of Queen Lili’uokalani. The Committee of Safety was made to set up a provisional government. The men apart of the committee who are trying to start a provisional government and take away a monarchy are doing so because they dont like what Hawaiian citizens have told them. They want to take away their culture and start something new, something they think is “the right way”. In the events that occurred the queen could do nothing else but give up her thrown to prevent fights and chaos among citizens.
The Queen’s new proposed constitution is very favorable. In this new constitution, it will establish better voting rights for Hawaiian citizens. In this constitution property requirements for voters will be decreased. I am in favor of this because we as Hawaiian citizens should not have to have a huge property requirement to vote on our own land. Another proposal in this new constitution is that judges will be appointed 6 years instead of life. I am also in favor of this because with a judge appointed for life there wont be a lot of new judges who get appointed. When a judge is appointed for so long he/she may convince people that he/she is trustworthy but after a while will start breaking laws on their own. The queen has the right to develope a new constitution and the Committee of Safety does not have the power to deny her that right.
My opinion of Minister John Stevens’ recognition of the provisional government is that he is just adding to the dilemma at hand. The reason i say this is because he didnt just agree with this idea, he helped force it. He went along with the Committee of Safety and forcefully sent American Marines during a protest against Queen Liliuokalani. He did not have the power to do this and he along with the committee are abusing their authority. When the queen asked President Cleveland to reinstate her authority he sent James Blount to look into and inspect the situation. Blout agreed that Stevens was abusing his authority, and that the American flag be taken down. President Cleveland even stated that the provisional government had been proved to be a faulty government.
Thank you for giving me the time to state my opinion along with evidence supported it. I believe that overthrow of Queen Lili’uokalani is irrational and my opinions and the evidence that i stated should persuade you to look into the matter yourself, and determine how you truly feel on the matter.
Sincerely,
Alyssa Lopiccolo
